Expert Exchange Driving Progress in Mechatronics
PI’s first Symposium on Mechatronics System Design (SMSD), held in June 2026, brought together experts from research, industry, and application development to discuss current challenges in precision motion and mechatronics system design.
Over two inspiring days, participants explored solution-oriented approaches, shared technical insights, and discussed how advanced motion technologies can support demanding applications in science and industry.
Symposium Proceedings, Topics, and Highlights
The 2026 SMSD proceedings volume brings together the contributions presented at the symposium and is now available for download as a PDF on this page. The publication can also be accessed directly via Zenodo.
The 2026 symposium focused on precision motion, mechatronics system design, sensing, control, and system accuracy. Keynote presentations addressed linear motors, wear, error budgeting, and accuracy in long-range nanopositioning systems.
Participants discussed a broad range of applications and technologies, including:
- Precision engineering applications such as cryogenic positioning and wafer-level testing
- Parallel kinematics, hexapods, and multi-DOF motion platforms
- Linear motors, MagLev systems, piezo-based drives, and actuator technologies
- Sensor technologies, metrology concepts, and interferometric measurement
- Error budgeting and compensation strategies
- Modeling, simulation, and design methods
- Material properties, friction surfaces, and piezoceramic loss effects
Dynamics, control, system performance, and learning-based approaches
